Still, he flew the glider over the area again and again over the next few hours. He flew in large circles and small circles, in parallel lines and in crazy curves.

When the night slowly began to give way to the day, Aruula asked: “And what shall we do now?”

I have no idea, Matt wanted to admit. Instead, in order to engender a little more hope, he declared, “We need to find out when and where we’ve been stranded.”

“And then?”

“We shall see.”

He looked at the map displayed by the onboard computer, which, of course, only partly correlated with reality. After all, the map was from another world in which the impact of Kristofluu only partly changed the Earth’s axis, suddenly creating mountain ranges as well as the giant Crater Lake in Asia.

They would have to find a settlement somewhere—but where would one find them in the desert? Near water, of course!

Matt tipped on the map. “There’s a river here.” He leaned forward and read, “Morin Gol. Never heard of it.”

Without a satellite system that told them where they were in relation to the map, it wasn’t easy to find their way around—and amid a monotonous landscape like the Gobi Desert, it was nearly impossible. Still, he only needed half an hour of flying to find the river and follow it.

As a precaution, he stayed low enough to fly under any radar, if such technology even existed in this world.

When he thought about that, he sat up in his pilot seat and tried his level best to suppress the urge to hit his head with his palm. The shock had obviously suppressed the most obvious truths about their situation. “I’m such an idiot!”

“What’s wrong?” Aruula asked.

“The radio! If we have landed in a technologically advanced age...” Instead of finishing his sentence, he pointed to the frequency regulator. “See if you can find a signal.”

And it turned out that there were messages going back and forth on different frequencies. Thanks to their implanted automatic translators, Matt and Aruula could understand the messages that were being spoken in Chinese, Indian and Russian. They understood the words, but still couldn’t comprehend anything.

The voices were talking about a volcano in the Sahara, and about a threat to the already unstable world peace thanks to provocation from the Americans. They cursed at each other and accused each other of different things. They also talked about an army of tanks that had recently withdrawn from an unsuccessful attack on intruders from the restricted area in the Gobi desert.

Matt didn’t know what worried him more, the army of tanks or the restricted area. He even thought he heard that an atomic bomb had exploded somewhere near here.

Well isn’t that grand?! In this world, the shit really seemed to have hit the fan and they had flown right into the middle of it.

That being said, he couldn’t see any military forces nearby, though that would have been quite a coincidence given the size of the Gobi Desert.

They followed the flow of the river until the landscape underneath them changed.
